Super fast micro Quantum Random Number Generator

A random number is a number chosen by chance. It is the core element of encrypting secret information which is used in all ICT field. Random number generators are divided into Pseudorandom number generator and True random number generator. Also, Quantum random number generator among True random number generators is one of the generators that can create perfect random numbers. However, most random numbers used today are Pseudorandom numbers which we use S/W method to realize the numbers. Because these

numbers are generated by the inserted specific algorithm, they are exposed to a possibility to be hacked. Also, the longer the numbers the slower the process and they tend to form certain patterns.

The solution was to use quantum numbers which are generated by the physical laws of natural phenomenon. However, it had technical limitation to be widely used.

To give a comprehensive solution to these problems, EYL succeeded in developing super fast micro Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG). The existing method of generating quantum random numbers was divided into ¡®optical type (using photon)¡¯ and ¡®electrical type (using electric resistance)¡¯. It has advantage that it is difficult to predict as it is irregular but it requires a large device and is very expansive to be commercialized. For this reason, it mainly has been used for military purposes or special researches.

However, EYL¡¯s QRNG adopted radioactive isotope for the first time in the world and realized safety, speed and size (micro) by solving its unpredictability, bias and discrepancy of numbers.

QRNG uses the natural half-life period which is in the high energy radioactive isotope. Alpha particles are released when radioactive isotope is collapsed and QRNG makes them clash with specially designed components to generate pulse and to create random numbers by measuring the time interval of the pulse.

The pulse happens naturally so it does not follow any rules or algorithm which means that it can create a perfectly safe encrypted numbers. EYL¡¯s Micro Quantum Pulse Generator is 5x5mm which is smaller and lighter than a woman¡¯s little fingernail and it only costs less than $1. Also, the radioactive isotope uses only 1/6400 of alpha particle used in fire detector so that it can guarantee the safety. The product passed ST800-22, 90B (NIST, US) and DIEHARDER Test so the quality of the random numbers was approved and it achieved the fastest speed of 1.8Gbps as a USB type for the first time in the world.

For this achievement, EYL received the top prize at IoT Security Competition held by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning in 2015.
